AI TRiSM: What the Four Pillars Require

AI Trust, Risk and Security Management (AI TRiSM) is a framework from Gartner for managing the trust, risk and security of artificial intelligence systems. Gartner defines AI TRiSM as a discipline spanning model governance, trustworthiness, fairness, reliability, robustness, efficacy and data protection across the AI lifecycle. Gartner introduced the concept in 2022 as one of its top strategic technology trends and later published a dedicated Market Guide for AI Trust, Risk and Security Management covering the vendor landscape.

AI TRiSM exists because AI introduced risk that traditional security tools were never built to handle. A model generates an output. An agent takes an action. Both touch sensitive data in ways legacy controls cannot see, let alone stop, before the data has already moved. Most AI security plans cover one of those risks and miss the other two.

Why AI TRiSM Matters Now

69% of organizations suspect employees are using prohibited GenAI tools, according to Gartner. Every prompt an employee sends into an AI tool is a potential data transfer, and every action an autonomous agent takes happens without a person reviewing each step. AI TRiSM gives security and risk teams a shared vocabulary and a four-part structure for managing that exposure.

The Four Pillars of AI TRiSM

Gartner organizes AI TRiSM around four pillars. Each one names a principle. The control below it is what puts that principle into practice, not just a description of the risk.

Explainability and Model Monitoring

A report tells you about a decision you did not get to make. That distinction is worth keeping clear here: monitoring AI usage and the data moving through it is a different job than interpreting why a model reached a specific decision, and a credible answer keeps the two separate rather than blurring them.

Gartner's definition spans both: explainability, the ability to interpret a model's decisions, and model monitoring, the ongoing detection of drift, bias and anomalous behavior over time. The practical control available today is the monitoring half, paired with action. The Forcepoint AI Governance Dashboard gives a single view across sanctioned AI platforms, shadow AI tools and agents, with full prompt and response logging searchable by user and classification. An immutable audit trail attributes every action to both the agent and the person who triggered it, supporting the kind of evidence an AI audit requires under the EU AI Act, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and NIST's AI Risk Management Framework.

ModelOps

ModelOps covers the lifecycle of an AI model itself: deployment, version control, retraining and retirement. It is an AI engineering discipline, closer to MLOps than to data security, and it sits outside what a data security platform does. A glossary entry that forces a product into every pillar is doing marketing, not explaining the framework. ModelOps is the one pillar where the honest answer is that it belongs to a different team and a different category of tooling.

AI Application Security

Gartner's definition of AI application security is broad, spanning everything from training infrastructure and software supply chains to the applications and agents that interact with AI. The control below addresses the application and interaction layer: the point where employees, AI tools and AI agents actually touch data, not the infrastructure underneath them.

Non-human identities already outnumber human users 82 to 1 inside the enterprise, and each one is a potential path to sensitive data. Forcepoint AI Data Security discovers unsanctioned AI tools across personal accounts, browser extensions and Model Context Protocol (MCP) clients, then risk-ranks each one and applies inline allow, restrict or block policy, down to a single feature within a tool. For agents calling business applications directly, the Forcepoint AI Agent Gateway brokers every credential, closing a gap zero trust never covered. No agent holds direct application credentials. Ever. Field-level redaction blocks personally identifiable information, source code and secrets before an agent can read them, and sensitive writes or deletes hold for human approval.

Privacy

Gartner's privacy pillar covers the data used to train, test and run AI, along with the policies that keep it handled lawfully and safely.

The practical control starts before an AI tool ever sees the data. Forcepoint Data Security Posture Management (DSPM) discovers and classifies sensitive data across cloud, endpoint and SaaS environments, using AI Mesh to flag files that are overpermissioned, misplaced or simply forgotten, before an employee can share them with an AI tool. Forcepoint Data Loss Prevention (DLP) extends roughly 2,000 existing policy templates and classifiers to every AI channel with no new taxonomy to build. For Microsoft Copilot specifically, classification tags confidential SharePoint and OneDrive files so Copilot cannot summarize or surface them, closing the gap before the first prompt is typed rather than after.

AI TRiSM vs. AI Governance, Responsible AI and AI Security

AI governance sets policy, process and oversight for how AI gets built and used. AI TRiSM adds the technical controls that enforce those policies and catch violations in real time.

Responsible AI is a set of ethical principles: fairness, transparency, accountability. AI TRiSM operationalizes those principles into specific pillars and controls rather than leaving them as values.

AI security protects the infrastructure AI runs on, from training environments to the software supply chain. AI TRiSM is narrower and more specific: the trust, risk and security posture of AI systems themselves, including the data they touch.

Getting Started with AI TRiSM

Four starting points, in order:

  • Inventory every AI tool and agent already running, sanctioned and shadow alike
  • Classify the data those tools and agents can reach before writing new policy
  • Extend existing data loss prevention policy to AI channels rather than building a new taxonomy from scratch
  • Add monitoring and an audit trail before an incident forces the issue

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AI TRiSM?

AI TRiSM, short for AI Trust, Risk and Security Management, is a framework from Gartner for managing the trust, risk and security of AI systems across model governance, fairness, reliability and data protection.

Who created AI TRiSM?

Gartner created and named AI TRiSM, introducing it in 2022 as one of its top strategic technology trends.

What are the four pillars of AI TRiSM?

The four pillars are explainability and model monitoring, ModelOps, AI application security and privacy.

How is AI TRiSM different from AI governance?

AI governance sets the policies and oversight process for AI. AI TRiSM adds the technical controls that enforce those policies and catch violations as they happen.

How do I get started with AI TRiSM?

Start by inventorying every AI tool and agent already in use, classifying the data they can reach, extending existing data security policy to AI channels and adding monitoring with an audit trail.

How Forcepoint AI Data Security Applies These Controls

Forcepoint is the AI Data Security company delivering AI and data trust you can prove. Its coverage concentrates on two of Gartner's four pillars, privacy and AI application security, enforced through three connected motions. Know the data and the AI before they meet, through Forcepoint DSPM discovery and classification. Adapt protection as risk changes, extending existing Forcepoint DLP policy to every AI channel with no rebuild required. Protect where AI and data intersect, through the Forcepoint AI Agent Gateway and inline enforcement across SaaS, web and endpoint.

Explainability in the full sense and ModelOps remain separate disciplines. The Forcepoint AI Governance Dashboard adds the monitoring and audit evidence layer on top, without claiming to interpret model internals or manage the AI model lifecycle itself.
