ChatGPT on New Cyberthreats Arising from Generative AI

Part two of a five-part ChatGPT Series
ChatGPT

We already know hackers are using artificial intelligence. Many companies are banning the use of ChatGPT (for now). We think generative AI can unlock your employees’ efficiency and creativity beyond the ways tools like the personal computer, the Internet and mobile devices already have. Forcepoint has the tools that will empower your employees to harness the power of tools like ChatGPT while keeping your organization’s critical data safe and secure.

In this five-part ChatGPT series, we asked ChatGPT about generative AI and its potential impact to cybersecurity. This second post in the ChatGPT series examines new threats arising from AI.

In general, what are the new threats facing enterprises as a result of the use of generative AI tools across the business landscape?

As generative AI tools become more prevalent across the business landscape, they introduce new threats and challenges for enterprises. Some of these threats include:

  • Deepfakes and synthetic media: The use of generative AI to create realistic but fake media content can lead to reputational damage, fraud, and disinformation. Enterprises need to be vigilant in detecting and responding to such content to protect their brand and customers.
  • Advanced phishing and social engineering attacks: Generative AI models can create highly convincing phishing emails, messages, or even synthetic voices, making it more challenging to differentiate legitimate communication from malicious attacks. This can lead to an increased risk of data breaches, unauthorized access, or financial losses.
  • Intellectual property theft: Generative AI tools can potentially be used to reverse-engineer proprietary algorithms, designs, or patterns, leading to the theft of intellectual property or competitive advantage.
  • AI-generated disinformation: The use of AI-generated content to spread false information or manipulate public opinion can harm a company's reputation, customer trust, or even market value.
  • Erosion of trust in digital content: The widespread use of generative AI tools can lead to a general erosion of trust in digital content, as it becomes more difficult to discern what is genuine and what is fake. This can have wide-ranging implications for online communication, advertising, and content consumption.
  • AI-driven cyberattacks: Generative AI can be used to automate and optimize cyberattacks, making them more targeted, efficient, and difficult to detect. This can increase the frequency and severity of attacks, putting more pressure on enterprise security teams.
  • Unintended biases and ethical concerns: The use of generative AI tools in various business processes can lead to the unintentional introduction of biases or ethical issues, such as discrimination or privacy violations, which can result in legal or reputational damage.
  • Compliance and regulatory challenges: The increasing use of generative AI tools can create new compliance and regulatory challenges, as laws and regulations struggle to keep up with the rapidly evolving technology.

To mitigate these threats, enterprises need to develop robust security strategies that incorporate AI and machine learning, invest in employee training and awareness, and collaborate with the wider industry and government agencies to develop standards and best practices for the responsible use of generative AI
