5 Pillars for Creating Your Modern ‘Unbound’ Enterprise

Jim Fulton

Part of an ongoing series about SASE

Enterprises (and the vendors trying to sell to them) have been talking about digital transformation journeys for many years. Then, in March 2020, the pandemic accelerated everyone’s migration to the cloud almost overnight.

5 Pillars for Creating an Unbound Enterprise

Organizations that depended upon traditional, centralized networks and designated offices suddenly found themselves in a highly distributed world. Employees were largely working from home. Applications were rapidly moving up into the cloud (either as SaaS apps from third-party vendors or as private cloud apps on platforms such as AWS or Azure). And data suddenly was living in all of these places. IT often had to perform heroic acts to enable these changes, but as the shackles that tied people to the old ways of managing information fell away, we saw the beginning of a new age in which people have the freedom to work anywhere and anytime—what some are now calling the Unbound Enterprise.

Working from home is just the beginning

By necessity, the focus of many IT departments in 2020 was on enabling people to work from home. In 2021, how and where people work is changing yet again. Many businesses are looking at a phased approach in which people work at home part of the time and in the office part of the time. Some hearty souls will even begin to travel once again. In short, people will be working in multiple places, even in the course of a single day.

For people to work anywhere yet be safe everywhere, connectivity and security will have to follow them seamlessly. Addressing these challenges in a distributed world is the essence of the Unbound Enterprise.

In the coming weeks, we’ll dig into each of these areas, looking at how you can use new approaches such Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) and Zero Trust to create your own Unbound Enterprise:

  • Protect remote workers in web & cloud
  • Control access to cloud & private apps without VPNs
  • Connect & protect branch offices
  • Safeguard usage of data everywhere
  • Continuously monitor user risk

We’ll also be discussing these topics with a panel of security practitioners at our upcoming webcast “5 pillars for creating your modern Unbound Enterprise with data-centric SASE”. Hope to see you there.
