Forcepoint Data Visibility provides a panoramic view of your company’s data

Data security starts with data visibility
Kevin Oliveira

Right now, are you able to see and understand what unstructured data you currently manage across multiple clouds and on-premises? If you were likely to be contacted for a compliance audit today and had to respond quickly, do you have a clear view into your compliance risk and all your organization’s sensitive data? If an employee gave their notice that they would be leaving the company soon, could you see all the sensitive files and share drives that person has access to and is in the process of uploading to a cloud drive before leaving?

All these questions are important for today’s data security teams. They all revolve around the aspect of “visibility.” Data security starts with data visibility. With strong visibility, companies can avoid data breaches, defend against hackers, insider threats, ransomware, and even accidental data exfiltration.

That’s why we’re introducing Forcepoint Data Visibility powered by Getvisibility to our customers. It provides answers to the above questions and more. It does so by providing a truly panoramic view into all your unstructured data no matter where it’s located—spanned across multiple clouds or on-premises.

Here are five ways Forcepoint Data Visibility helps provide a panoramic view of your organization’s data:

Leverages AI-enabled classification for increased accuracy

Panoramic visibility starts with leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). The Forcepoint Data Visibility ML model has been trained by hundreds of millions of files across multiple industries. It continues to learn and learn in order to provide continued superior accuracy. Its AI model also delivers enriched classification that adds the unique ability to see into files for PII and other sensitive information. This is part of a new generation of “data classification +” solutions that use AI/ML to move beyond merely looking at regex or dictionary expressions to deliver highly accurate classification and categorization frameworks to build policies against.

Shines a light on “dark data.”

Take “dark data” head on. With digital transformation projects well under way for many organizations, accompanying data growth for many has been almost exponential. It’s been noted that of all this data, 80% is unstructured—not part of a pre-defined data model or pre-defined organizational structure. 90% of unstructured data is considered to be “dark data” – data that isn’t part of current business processes and is not analyzed. It is unknown data. And it’s data that can be rich in PII or other sensitive information. For many organizations, unknown data is unprotected data. The solution is high resolution discovery and classification.

Forcepoint Data Visibility excels at fast data discovery. Once discovered, leveraging the AI/ML model, it returns “enriched classification.” Enriched classification moves beyond common classification tags such as confidential, internal, public to provide extensive categorization and sub-categorization based on real-life business terms. Enriched classification makes it simple to build highly effective policies to protect this data. It moves dark data into the light. Here's a demo video that shows how Forcepoint Data Visibility can help eliminate dark data:

Eliminates ROT data

For many organizations, data is an asset but it can also become a liability. Let’s face it. At an individual level, most of us are data hoarders. We save multiple copies of files we’re working on in multiple locations. Multiple copies of sensitive files can make data a liability.

This leads to the issue of “ROT”—redundant, outdated and trivial data. ROT happens when we keep redundant/multiple copies of files often with sensitive information that is unnecessary. Stale files are files that often haven’t been modified in years. Trivial data are files that often have incomplete information and do not serve any business purpose.

In terms of security, redundant and outdated data both exponentially expand the data universe that needs to be protected. It leaves an organization more vulnerable—open to more data breaches, data exfiltration and non-compliance risk.

See the below video to learn more about how Forcepoint Data Visibility can help you get a handle on ROT data.

Controls access to your organization’s most sensitive data

What happens when an employee resigns to go work for a competitor? Are you able to see exactly what files that person has access to in that moment? Many organizations have surprisingly loose data access controls in place that allow users access to files or share drives completely outside of their areas of responsibility. This reality makes it easy for employees to take sensitive data files on their way out—something that can cost companies millions.

One way to prevent data loss through too much access is by applying the “Principle of Least Privilege” (POLP). It’s an important zero trust concept and looks to give individuals permission to only the files required to do their job. Forcepoint Data Visibility’s panoramic view provides broad overall visibility to your data access picture.  With Forcepoint Data Visibility, customers can see the exact permissions for every file scanned, including the files individuals or groups have access to.

See the below demo video on how Forcepoint Data Visibility can help your organization apply Principle of Least Privilege access:

Provides insights into compliance risks

The Ponemon Institute estimates that the average cost to an organization for non-compliance is $142M. The price of non-compliance can go much higher. In fact, the largest GDPR fine in recent years was over $780 million dollars! The risk of non-compliance and the potential costs needs to be understood. Many organizations need to be ready for a compliance audit at any time.

Forcepoint Data Visibility provides a snapshot into what an organization’s overall risk is at any moment. Through risk reporting, clear direction can be given into where the risk is taking place and what steps need to be taken to minimize compliance risk. Reports can be regularly run as progress is being made to clearly eliminate compliance risk.
