Unlocking Hidden Dangers: Safeguard Against Threats Within Web Messaging Apps

Carlos Carvajal

If your organization leverages WhatsApp Web and Telegram Web to engage with customers, don't be lulled into a false sense of security. While these applications provide end-to-end encryption, it is important to recognize that only the communication between the recipients is encrypted, leaving the endpoint and network exposed to harmful web threats.

Fortunately, Forcepoint Remote Browser Isolation (RBI) extends Zero Trust web access to web-based messaging applications. This allows for safer and wider use of these convenient messaging apps, so your team stays productive while providing a great customer experience.

Protect Users and Data on the Web

Forcepoint RBI secures WhatsApp Web and Telegram Web:

  • Enables Zero Trust web browsing: RBI isolates web-borne threats from the endpoint and network by executing the web messaging session on an isolated container instead of on the local endpoint. Potential threats remain isolated and are terminated once the session ends, effectively blocking all web-borne threats from infiltrating the endpoint or your network. RBI also helps productivity by eliminating the tedious QR verification process required each time a user signs into WhatsApp Web or Telegram Web. Users only need to sign in once a day, even if the session times out or the browser tab is closed.

  • Prevents Zero-day exploits: Consider this scenario: Your IT help desk leverages WhatsApp Web to communicate with customers to resolve IT tickets. And one of your admins is using an outdated web browser with unpatched vulnerabilities. A Zero-day threat can infiltrate your network through a seemingly routine customer message that contains a malicious link or document. Eliminate Zero-day exploits with Forcepoint RBI and stop threats that elude traditional Anti-Virus solutions.

  • Protects against phishing attacks: If your customer’s device becomes compromised, your organization can be a prime candidate for phishing attacks. Are you protected against this threat vector? Safeguard your organization against spear phishing and other types of social engineering attacks while using web-based messaging apps. RBI prevents credential theft by automatically converting fake sites into read-only mode based on the threat score policy. Disabling the ability to enter data into text fields and blocking document uploads and downloads helps ensure that your users do not become victims of phishing attacks.

  • Stops data theft and malicious downloads: What may seem like a harmless outbound message with an attachment, could contain your organization’s Intellectual Property (IP). Browser-based messaging applications can be used by insider threats to smuggle company data out of the network using steganography. Similarly, inbound messages can contain malware within documents, and once opened, can infect your endpoint. RBI and Zero Trust CDR prevent data theft by sanitizing documents, removing confidential data at upload and malicious code at download. RBI can also restrict print and clipboard access and allow downloads only after the documents have been safely previewed.

Don’t let web threats discourage your organization from leveraging the convenience of web-based messaging. Utilize RBI to safely use WhatsApp Web and Telegram Web to boost user productivity and customer satisfaction, while safeguarding your endpoint, data, and network.
