A new guide to the DLP market according to Gartner®

Kevin Oliveira

To help customers pursuing a strong data security strategy, Gartner analysts Andrew Bales and Ravisha Chugh have shared some important points in the Gartner report that we believe customers need to consider when looking for a successful data security solution deployment.

As the amount of data continues to grow exponentially and the size and value of data breeches also continues to grow – we see forward-looking organizations searching for DLP solutions that go beyond traditional DLP methods.  Organizations need a new type of DLP solution that provides next-generation data security capabilities.

DLP is a mature technology, but the emergence of tools with a focus on cloud and insider risk management use cases has provided SRM leaders with the option to invest in a next-generation data security tool." *

This report notes that in 2021 Gartner has fielded 29% more client inquiries on the topic of DLP than in 2020.  Below are some top reasons we also see in the market from the report that speak to the growing interest in DLP

  •  “Identify DLP capabilities to address data risks and business needs.”
In our opinion, DLP vendors have been so focused on content and are so data-centric that they miss the important context of user behavior.  Not every user is the same nor are all data exfiltration incidents the same.  With Risk-Adaptive Protection, Forcepoint has been helping customers modernize their DLP by exploring this growing area of monitoring risky user behavior.  It helps organizations combine the context of user behavior with DLP policies to dramatically increase enforcement accuracy and reduce false positives/negatives.  As stated in the report, “Today, the DLP market is evolving as we see a convergence of IRM and DLP tools. This approach utilizes content-inspection capabilities with behavioral analytics and machine learning and also helps in reducing the number of false positives.”

  • “Use data classification technology, as it is fundamental to data security and compliance efforts.”
We agree that accurate classification is critical to successful DLP deployments.  It’s often said that you can’t protect what you can’t see.  Forcepoint DLP has built in integration with leading classifier solutions to ensure a high level of data visibility. We believe this so strongly that we’ve also recently released Forcepoint Classification powered by Getvisibility.  We’ve seen a tremendously positive response from our customers with this new classification offering. It leverages artificial intelligence and machine learning to deliver highly accurate classification suggestions and can even be used along with Microsoft Purview Information Protection (MPIP) to increase the accuracy of MPIP classifications for even stronger security and compliance.

  • “Overcome the challenges presented by a cloud-first strategy by implementing a solution to map and secure sensitive data across the hybrid environment."
DLP deployments that cover all the security egress vectors (email, cloud applications, web, network, and endpoints) are essential to protect data both on-prem and in the cloud.  Forcepoint has developed our product based on the principle of “DLP Everywhere” – providing visibility and control everywhere your people work, and where your data resides. We have developed a DLP solution that simplifies the complexity of hybrid environments, providing customers control across these environments from a single unified policy.

  • “Use consulting and managed services to shorten the time to value and augment lean IT and security departments.”
Forcepoint Professional Services has proven to help customers with not only initial DLP deployments but also to migrate off legacy DLP solutions that are no longer meeting their needs.  We’ve been able to help customers reach time to value in as little as 6 weeks with complete deployments across some of the most complicated organizations.  Check out our webinar 6 Stages for a Successful DLP Migration to learn how your organization can shorten your time to value with your next DLP deployment.

We recommend you read the updated Gartner Market Guide for DLP report.  We believe it highlights many critical areas for customers that need to be considered for a truly modern DLP deployment.  You can get a complementary download of this report by clicking here.
